Keeping Little Explorers Safe

An increasing number of children are admitted to hospital with serious injuries as a result of falling from open windows and balconies – especially in warmer weather.

Here are a few safety tips to help keep young children safe:

  • Fit child resistant restrictors to prevent upstairs windows from opening to more than 10cm (but you should still be able to open wider in an emergency e.g. fire).
  • Where possible only open top windows to aid ventilation but is safer
  • Always supervise children on balconies if relevant – keep the door to your balcony shut so they can’t get out without your knowledge.

Remember – children love to climb:

  • Keep beds, other furniture and other items away from windows that might make it easier for toddlers to climb
  • Keep pot plants and other objects away from the edge of balconies to prevent children from climbing
  • Be aware of light weight furniture/objects that children could drag to windows/railings
